Ancillary Task - CD Cover/ Digipack

This image and the one below are the same but one of the member is in different position. We chose the first image to use as our CD cover. The idea is that we wanted to make everything black and white but leave the colours of the mask. From feedback it was quite positive as the audience thought that this represents stereotype of rock genre. The main focus is on the mask and it stands out which also represents the darker side of them.

On Photoshop we coloured the eyes same as the masks just to make it stand out. All of it was basically red and the colour red has a lot of connotations such as evil, destruction which is exactly what we're trying to do.

For the CD we thought of having and image of one of the teachers. The reason for that is because in the riots it had people of all ages involved so for the CD we wanted someone a bit older than the artist. We took two pictures, one with the mask and one without the mask. On one side of the CD the teacher will have the mask on and on the other side without it.

We had a discussion with other groups and they though it was a great idea as it shows two sides of people who were involved in the riots. Of course everyone has a good and bad side to them and this image shows that

This is the second image of the teacher without the mask.

Inside cover of the CD will look similar to these images below.

Image1

This was one of our choices for our inside cover for our album cover we had feedback from our peers about the album cover. They liked the notion behind the inside cover. The idea behind the inside cover was to portray the idea of people living the dual lifestyle. Then our peers voted that we should use the image 2 for our inside cover of our album cover because the left hand side of the image looks more darker suggesting the evil and rebellious lifestyle. whereas image 1 the mask looked lighter.

First Draft of our album cover

This is our first draft of our album cover we wanted it to look similar to the Paramore Riot Album cover. Their album had their album name scribbled all over which shows a messy and untidy side of the band. We tried to do something similar as it represents a rockstars lifestyle. We also put images of the instruments we used just to show the audience that this is a rock album.

Album cover -
This is a CD album cover by the Gorillaz. As a group we decided to make something similar to this. We want to have the three band members with their masks on standing in the front with the guitar and drums at the back. Our plan is also to show the background of buildings similar to Gorillaz cover and edit the buildings on fire etc. The reason why is because our video is related to riots also reflects on our genre as rebellious.

The back side of the CD is dark and red like the front cover continuing its colours at the back. They have the list of song names and a barcode. An image also in the red square of the mic. At the bottom theres just a description of copyright etc.

On the CD cover of Gorillaz album they have black text on the plain white CD. On the CD they have the lists of song names from the album.

On the inside of the Album the have an image on the border and list of the songs on the left centre.

This is an image captured from youtube of a wrestling video. This is one of the wrestlers mask and in this clip the mask is on fire with ashes on the floor representing something bad  has happened in wrestling and we wanted to do something similar as our artists wear mask and as our genre represents rebellious life we thought we could do something like that. We tried using green screen and moving the mask and at the end add effects to it, however it didn't look as great as we expected so had to leave this idea out.

Magazine covers

To prepare for our print task we have started look at rock magazines. Although we have looked at lots of music videos within these genres we now need to get an understanding of the stylistic features of rock print tasks. Already just skimming over these covers its very clear to see this genre has a particular colours, images and font styles. Magazine adverts have been harder to find online. We would need to possibly buy some music magazines.
From this research we have identified conventions of:

  • Mostly white men
  • Either Thugish, or weird looking
  • There seems to be one female but she's acting like one of the males
  • The covers seem to be dimmer than other genres such as Cher Loyds swagger jagger which is located above on this research page
  • They look more energetic than any other genre type of music magazine

Paramore are one of the bands we did our research on. Mainly because their music is quite similar to the song we chose for this project. When we started our digi-pack research we looked at couple of their album to give us some ideas for ours. Our group liked that scribble on the top right and the font so we thought of maybe we can add something like that that suits the genre. For example, adding a skullbone.

This is another image taken from Paramore's album. In this image you can see that theres writing everywhere and its messed around. This kind of shows a rockstars life style like being artistic or you can say being messy. This was a idea we did consider but we had other ideas in mind.

A Rod Stewart album cover. From this album cover we see that he's the main star. The focus is on him and thought maybe we can put the artists in front with the propps used in the video to promote the artists.

As a group we decided that we would like to do something along the lines like this inside of our CD cover. This could also suggest  the notion of the 'dual lifestyle'

These following images below are our ideas to put on our magazine advert.

This was one of our choices for our background for the magazines advert.

This was one of our choices for our background for the magazines advert.

These are our choices for the Magazines advert

This magazine advert was liked by most of our peers as this will suit more towards our genre. In addition to we as a group also chose this because its black and the colour black is mostly used by artists and bands from the rock genre. However to an extent some of our peers also criticised that the background does not symbolise anything relevant to our genre but we as a group believe that it looks satanic connoting the fact that it is evil which could suggest that rebellious something which is not liked by society.
After showing these examples of magazine covers to the audience, from their feedback we gathered that this cover suits the genre of rock. Because of all the colours in the picture it shows the artistic nature of rockstars.
Also the text style has that gothic sense which relates to the stereotypes of rockstars being emo/goth. The effect used in the cover is a smashes glass which again reflects the charecteristic and stereotypes that rockstars just tend to break stuff, basically being rebels.
This was one of our drafts for the magazine advert. We did a survey with our peers the came to a decision that the problem with this magazine advert is that the background image looks very blurry. They also criticised that the there is too much going on in the background. However the background was good to an extent because there is similarities with the title of the song 'Wake This City Up' and the background image as this is one of the tourists attraction of the city.

This was another draft of our magazine advert. During our survey the peers criticised that the background image does not suit the genre of our music video. On the other hand we chose the breaking glass because it connotes the rebellious lifestyle but our peers said it will suit more towards the grime genre.

This is our draft of our CD Package

OFFICIAL DIGI-PACK!!!
This is how our CD cover looks like we also created a smaller version of our CD cover to show how it looks like. Our CD cover is a single CD cover so do not be confused by thinking it is an album cover.

This is how our six pack CD cover looks like (Mini version)
