Time lapse effect

Setting of our time lapse

This is one of our settings as we chose to do our time lapse in the image above it is a historic landmark of London. We chose this setting because it depicts the city landscape. In relation to our music video the time lapse of the day till the evening relates to our song ai it states 'One by one we rise at night now is a time for revolution' it is also to the our theme and our storyline were people become rebellious lifestyle.

Ideas for the music video

As a group we analysed the lyrics and had some ideas we could use for our video. We were thinking of adding few footages from the riots as this represents the youth as rebellions and riots was all about destruction which shocked everyone. However the problem was that we aren't allowed to have footages that have been on the news. So we sat down as a group again thinking of ideas similar to the riots and luckily we've got footages of recent events of the EDL and protests against Israel and Palestine so we decided to use them. Also we thought of a possible story line for our video. Our idea was to show the band during the night with their mask on showing them being rebellious and during the day in their uniform/ suit going to work/ college. This also relates to the riots how the young people were involved in this event during the night time and during the day they were either in work or school/ college.

Propps chosen for the band - the masks

For our costume research we went on ebay to look for some props. The key item we needed were the masks so we found some that suited the band and our chosen song. We chose 3 masks from the 5 and the media department in out school bought these for us.

Rebellious lifestyle narrative

This is a brainstorm of the narratives for our music video. In this slide there are images representing some of the narratives we've come up with as a group. Most of the images show someone being bullied or stressed. This is one type of representation of rock.

Cher Lloyd - Swagger Jagger

This is one of the music videos i researched for the coursework and i found this vid quite impressive because of the editing and the effects used in the vid. It must've been hard to make a music video like this to add all the effects at the correct places and getting the beat at the right places as well as her singing the song.
One of the things i wanted to consider for the coursework was the amount of propps used in that video and places where it was recorded. They also had a lot of people on the vid so when me and my group members make the music vid we may have to consider where to shoot it, what propps we need and how many people needed for the vid because we want to make it realistic and also make it look good to earn top marks. Costumes are important too because in her video she's wearing different clothers in nearly all shots so we might have to consider that too in different places where we film. The editing in this coursework will be hard because as seen in the swagger jagger video theres cuts nearly everywhere to different scences and different types of camera shots used such as close ups, med shots, long shots etc.
One of the other things that should be considered is the weather and the lighting, we want to get it recorded on a good day plus dont want some scenes to be too dark or too bright so this should be checked carefully. There are a lot of lighting used in Cher's video like some parts where lights are flashing etc. And if we do decide to get people in out coursework then we have to give them some roles to do because we can't have then standing around, in Cher's video young teens are dancing around. So her songs attract mostly teens because of the lyrcis and the music video. We have to consider what kind of video we're going to make in order to reach our audiences and gurantee sales which is part of the coursework where we have to mention how we're going to promote it and sell it etc.
This is the new Pixie Lott Single with Pusha T. In this video Pixie Lott is trying to show her self off. This is a Pop type music. In the Video Pixie sings "what do you take me for?" And in the video she shows that she can do whatever she wants and not have someone boss her around.

Pixie Lott - Broken Arrow

This is a RnB type song and the lyrics represent her feelings. Some of the camera shots show that in the begenning of her missing the person she was in a relationship in the video. And its a very typical Rnb Video where it shows some clips of her spending time with him etc.
Music History

music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos date back much further, they came into prominence in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium. Prior to the 80s, these works were described by various terms including "illustrated song", "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional clip" or "film clip".
Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film. Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation and live action. Many music videos do not interpret images from the song's lyrics, making it less literal than expected.

That’s why it was always wrong when music critics, in the early days of MTV’s domination, complained that music videos imprinted prefabricated images onto the shifting illusions of a song. When a music video strikes a nerve, it gives pop listeners a rare chance to interpret a song visually. And these ready-made mental pictures that came across on the TV screen could powerfully influence our own imaginings. Viewers learned how to dance, dress, flirt and dream.

Busted Swede

One of the things i've learned from this task is the complexity of making a music video and working in groups. We realised that every group member needs a clear role because if there isn't then problems will be caused. The lisping was one of the hardest part of this task because we had to sing at the exact same time as the song, if not then the music video will be ruined and won't look good. When we start making our music video we should think about the time and weather because if its snowy or rainy on day then we may not be able to record. There should also be a team leader who takes charge so on the recording day no problems are caused. The camera man should also be experienced because camera accuracy is key for this coursework. When we did this task some of the shots were shaky even though we had several shots of the same scene and it was hard to pick out the best one. Also the lighting was important too because in some scenes the room had to be dark and in our classroom we had no curtains to cover the sunlight so we used posters to cover the windows. When we make our music video we have to consider some of these things in order to get a good video.
One of the problems we had with this task that no one wanted to sing so when we make our video we have to get confident actors who are willing to sing or any one of the group members. Without a singer how can we make a music video? So during the busted task some people had to sing so it didn't turn out too good but overall it was alright.

Animal Music video

During this task we learned how to use the new software called Final Cut. We'll be using this software for our coursework to edit because its a lot better than the one we used last year for our movie video. The editing in this software is much more efficient, its easy to use and whatever we cut is in the bin so we can always get it back again rather than letting it be completely deleted. During this task we had several clips and music and from it we had to make a one minute music video.

Linkin Park - Faint

Linkin Park Faint is a Rock/ Screamo song. This CD cover suites the type of song it is. The colour is dark and its like graffiti on a wall in a dark place. This could possibly relate to the lyrics of the song how he feels. The Text is in Black, White and Red. Faint is written in red which again can represent loneliness or hatred. This pretty much again has a relation to the lyrics used for the song.
Most people would think Rock bands are rebels as well as people who grafitti on walls. In the image you can see a picture of someone with a spray can and on the wall it says "Linkin Faint". This image represents the song and the band as rebels.

The Music Industry Today

Nowadays there are a lot of artists for different type of genres. The artists promote their songs going to shows such as X-Factor to perform their new single. This is a good way to make an artist successful because this show has a lot of viewers and its an easy way to promote it. Magazines are another key way to promote an artist. In the magazine there could be information of the artists, his/her story and talk about their new song. Also add images of them shooting their video etc to show the readers how their experience is and people may consider listening to their new song which is another way of promotion and being successful. Music videos are a key example of selling an artists off and making them successful. Giving new looks to the artist may encourage people to look like him/her and lyrics can be key. Most people like Eminem for the lyrics and passion he uses for his song which makes him one of the successful artists these days. He's not known for his looks but his lyrics makes him the successful artists that he is at the moment. Another example is Chris Brown, he's known for his looks and the good song and video he makes. People love watching him dance in his videos and the lyrics to his song has a relation to the music video. His looks are another example of what makes him successful. People want to look like him and will try to keep up to date with Chris Brown.

Rnb, Hip Hop, Rock Genres.

The reason why this is my favourite music video is because of the quality of editing effects in the video. In the first couple of minutes you see all this blue effect with justin timberlake dancing etc and he looks like some hologram thing. Its a pretty hard skill to implement on a music video like this.
At 3.30 minutes into the video the whole scene changes, Justin Timberlake stands in the middle singing and several camera shots were used. The location is quite important because it could represent something and in that part the background is all white and he's wearing white which could refer to elegance or angelic. And this part matches with the music because suddenly it goes all smooth and quiet.

Top 10 music in that genre (my opinion):

The reason why i chose this as one of my top 10 in the genres mentioned above is because its a great song and the video is good too. The lyrics and the video match with each other. During the video you'll see some parts justin timberlake singing as well as flashbacks from movies or any tv series he took part in wich match with the lyrics. So for example when he sings, "it all goes back to when i dropped out of school having fun i was living the life" a little footage comes of him as a small teenager/boy having fun. This is an idea of what we can do for the coursework because at some parts we can show the artist singing and add flashbacks which suit the lyrcis of the song, like a little story to the video.

This is a Taylor swift video, you belong to me. I dont really like the song but the video is good. The reason why its good because the lyrics and the video have some sort of story. And the artist is dressed as a geek to show how life of a geek is in the video. Throughout the video when she's singing its how her life is and how the popular peoples life is. In the video you can see that she loves the best football player in the school and he's going out with the head cheerleader which is like a cliche in most american films where you see the head cheerleader going out with a footballer. It also sterotypes how cheerleaders are, snobby, evil, mean etc and in the video you can see that. This is a short summary so at the end o the video you see the geek ends up with the footballer which kind of tells that people like her can be popular too whether shes a geek or not.

This is a rock type music which is one of the genres im considering choosing for the coursework. The reason why is because the instruments are available in the school and the costume is quite easy as well as acting it out. I like this video because again the lyrics and video represent how he's feeling. And you can also see that they're performing in a concert and most bands perfrom in concerts for promotion etc. So if we did decide to do a rock genre music then we can use this video as an example because the the instruments are available for a band, costume is pretty easy to get and dont have to film in several locations which'll make life easier for us. The camera shots are really good in this video too when theres close ups of showing how passionate rocksters are when they're singing. Also the editing is good in the video with the little cuts and fits in with the music well. The lighting is something to consider too because again it could match with lyrcis, for example if your lyrics are like sad, heart broken then dark light can be used to represent how the artist is feeling, dark lighting will represent loneliness.

Creating Artist:

If we decide to choose an Rnb/Hip Hop song then we have to think of variaty of costumes. Locations is a key factor here too because when you look at rnb vids the locations are always changing as well as the artists costume. Alot of editing will be needed too such as cuts between each scenes. Most rnb songs are like sad/happy love songs so we have to represent the artist as a happy guy enjoying his love life or sad.

Choosing a rock song will make it quite easy because there wont need to be much locations as you see in most rock videos that there pretty much in one location like linkin park. Costume as well, wont need to have variaty of costumes. And its easy to represent an rock artist/band because you can make them look rebelious/goth doing graffiti/ breaking stuff which sterotypes as rockstars being rebels.

Justin Timberlake – Cry me a river

The Genre
The genre is Hip Hop and R n B

Hip hop is normally male based genre and R n B a feminine based how ever the music video has a cross based of two clashing together as Justin Timberlake imitating both sexuality with his voice. So from this music video I expect to see modern style with a big house or apartment the clothes on the singer would be in black clothing such as a jacket with a hood on and black straight jeans with converses. Also the artist should show his image with mixed emotions with this type of genre like sad, anger and happiness.

The whole point of this song express’s the artistes feelings of his girlfriend who has changed into a different person cheating on him with basterd’s making his heart shred into pieces.

The Lyrics and Visuals
The lyrics used in this song does have a relationship with the visuals as Justin Timberlake is expressing his hesitation yet evolvement of his girlfriend that has just broken his heart by showing him breaking into the home looking through stuff and spying on her when she arrives back home to leave her a little message on tape that his over her.

The lyrics "Cry me a river" is a sarcastic phrase said to person two who seems to be upset or beat up about something, when the person one for whatever reason doesn't believe that Person two should be moaning, whining, or indeed crying.

Therefore Person one tells the other to "Cry me a river", i.e. "yeah go on keep whingeing, crying as much as you want, I don't care". It can be meant harmlessly, and it can be meant harshly. So basically in the video Justin timberlake is trying to say to Britney spears ‘get over it’ his going to move on after being cheated on.

The Music and Visuals

The music has relationship with the visual in Justin Timberlake’s song ‘Cry me a river’ as there was piano’s and violin used through out the video and the sound of rain drops relating to the chorus “Cry me a river” with visuals of actual heavy rain drops falling from the sky in a horrible looking gloomy day which also reflects his mood of this breakup.

The demands to promote/ Sell the artist
There was many close up shots of the artists whilst singing in the video. With Justin Timberlake a good looking guy there would be plenty of girls in the world ready to buy his song because it was promoted to his breakup with his ex-girlfriend Britney spears who he loved when the breakup happened it shook the world as they was once the cutest couple in the around however Justin Timberlake promoted this song to her to showing he has had enough and she should deal with it his not going back to her. Also there was Timberland featuring in the track with Justin Timberlake for a further boost for his track being sold as Timberland fans can enjoy the track too once purchased. There was some voyeurism in the video as Justin Timberlake was making out with a brunette chick on the bed he and Britney once slept in whilst recording a video of him and the mysterious women on his lap kissing him like crap so with this clip it would surly attract men to buy this due to a ‘hot scene’ being involved.

Music history, sometimes called historical musicology, is the highly diverse subfield of the broader discipline of musicology that studies the composition, performance, reception, and criticism of music over time. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Artists these days promote their songs by performing live on shows such as X-Factor etc. This is a good oppurtunity for them to represent their new single and promote it because its a live show which is watched by a lot of people and its a good way to promote the song and get successful.
Magazines are also good to promote their single becuase they can talk about their video and the song which people may be interested in.
Music videos are also key to success becuase artists such as Chris Brown, Beyonce, Rihanna can show theirself off and most people love these artists because of their song, looks and videos. Its entertaining and young people are interested in the type of clothes they wear so this is a good way for them to be successful because of their uniqueness.

This song represents Justin Timberlakes feelings after the Britney Spears situation. Its an Rnb type song and he sang this song after the problems with Britney. The lyrics of the song is showing how he feels and in the video he shows that he doesnt care because he can do the same. Theres a women who looks like britney showing how she cheated on him and he records himself with another girl kissing etc and showing it to her.
The background colour of the cover is dark which represents hurt, lonely feeling etc.

Justin Timberlake - what goes around comes back around

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOrnUquxtwA

I have posted this song/video on this blog because now days music video's tend to have a dialogue in there song as if its a drama relating their issues onto the song. Now on the music video it starts of with Justin Timberlake trying to hit on scarlet Johanasson by telling her what she's interested etc then after the music starts then half way through you see her in the pool seeming to drown when then next dialogue starts as justin Timberlake saving her and saying if she is crazy drowning to her then justin Timberlake and scarlet are around with his mate and two other females talking amongst them self after that the music starts again and finally near the end justin tells his friend to keep a close eye on scarlet how ever j.t finds out his friend is making out with her and they get into a brawl she runs away in a car he follows in his car she then crashes and then the remix starts.

Linkin park - Numb

This is video of linkin park what i like about this is that the music video is like a story he's singing. In the video you see the band singing inside a church with all their instruments etc there. There are chapels at the background so you can tell that the place is holy. This sterotypes about rockstars being rebels and dont care about rules.
Then you see footages of a girl that no one cares about her existance, lonely, quiet and depressed. And the lead singer is singing that, "i want you to be more like me and be less like you" meaning that he wants her to be a rebel like him so the she can stand up for herself rather than being someone who's lonely and quiet.

Digipack research

In this music video the artist Lowkey raps about the oppressed people regardless of their particular faith or nationality. His opinion is very strongly expressed throught his lyrics. The articulate controversial view is what majority of the rappers rap about and how to resolve them. In the music video I identified some features the artist does in the music video which are: hand gestures which could connote his emotion and anger of the oppressed people as well as settings which are similar to the ghetto lifestyle which could possibly symbolise the hardship that the people go through and finally the use of fences which gives a notion that the people are neglected or segregated from society or could mean that the people live their lives like a prisoner. In conclusion I have learnt that most music videos have these subliminal messages which have powerful meanings. This could also be used in my music video so some of the audiences can understand the true meaning behind the music.

ABC SONG Music video evaluation

This task was particularly difficult because this was the first time I used final cut pro so it took me a while to get use to. The first time when I opened the software I was puzzled I did not know what to do I was struggling into which button I should click or press, and was scared if my make a mess of it, further I was struggling to just get the clip I wanted and in which I saw majority of my peers were ahead of me. However once I got the gist of the software it became easy just by playing around with it. Although my lips sink was not the best my main aim was to learn about the effects I could use in this software (final cut). Also using this software (Final Cut) was a challenge for myself because I was shocked in what you can do for example playing more than one clip simultaneously , last year I which I could do that in my coursework . One positives could be that for this year although we are currently behind we would find it quite easy on the editing this is because now that we have the gist of the software and its feature it could be easy for all of us to edit, on the other hand it could be argued that just to edit the lips sink of this task was extremely time consuming because we had to go through several clips find the perfect one and slot it in a perfect time so it sinks in with the track to give it a perfect lips sink. Never the less although it could be time consuming it would be particularly easy because now we know what sorts of transitions we could use in our lips sink task by doing further research on music video of our genre.
In conclusion, I believe once we start filming our music video we would find it straightforward to edit the clips from our music video because now everyone knows how to edit  clips as well as having the gist of lips sinking.

Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s.Reggae is based on a rhythmic style characterized by accents on the off-beat, known as the skank. Reggae is normally slower than rock steady. Reggae usually accents the second and fourth beat in each bar, with the rhythm guitar also either emphasizing the third beat or holding the chord on the second beat until the fourth is played. It is mainly this "third beat", its speed and the use of complex bass lines that differentiated reggae from rock steady, although later styles incorporated these innovations separately. This music i have chosen is by Sean Paul called 'Got to love you'

The artist Sean Paul is a songwriter who creates music which has a hybrid genre such as: Dancehall, Reggae and R n B. The way this genre is portrayed in this specific music video is through the lyrics of the song as well as the settings, costumes and props and etc. the way this music video starts is by the chorus ‘Got to love you’ and sets the scene of a club and a lady dancing.
This song is about two people who are of opposite genders who fall in love with each other in the apartment. Also throughout the music video there a relationship between the lyrics and visuals as well as voyeuristic treatment of the female body which hooks viewers to consume this type of media. This music video conforms with other music video of the same or similar genre.

In the beginning of the music video you see flashing lights of different colours which symbolises that the setting of this music video is a club or some sort.
In one of the parts of the video there is a close up of the lead singer then shots of the crowd in the club. It could suggest that the video is trying to show a possibility of having fun by being voyeuristic.
The singer is mostly relaxing. This could connote that the main singer Sean Paul is relaxing because he is a superior person prior to the girl in the music video this is because he says give you security’This could also give a notion that female cannot be independent. In addition to that in this music video and other music video which have similar things to it show the females as sex objects.

For the research i chose this music video by Snoop Dogg and T- Pain the track is called Boom. I found this music video very impressive which included very good editing techniques as well as this music video started up like a movie because they had bold white font titles. One thing i would consider for our music videos is props and costume and the editing this is because from the research the music video contained a lot of props and a variety of costumes. Also the music video contained a lot of different which will be hard to do.
Secondly the other i would consider for our music video is the setting and the lighting because we as group need to decide the place and time as these are vital points in our music video in addition to that the lighting is another important point because while we shoot the music video the lighting has to be perfect because it will differentiate from being too dark or light

Busted Swede

The Busted swede was the most challenging task for me this is because i experoenced the complexity of making a music video almost identical to the actual music video. In addtition to that to do the actual lips sink was the hardest thing for me overall in this task this is because we had to get the timing spot on other wise it was going to be more difficult for us. Furthermore i also learnt that when shooting any music video you had to have the timing the setting everything clear if it was not clear the actors will get bored of coming and participating in the shoot, we also had to consider all the other roles when shooting this music video we had to find who is the camera man the actor people who were in charge of bringing in propps and costumes and everything else. Another problem was that some people never turned up on the shoot day which created a lot of problems for some groups so they had delegate someone else to act but they did not want to this created a conflict between the peers. However on the other hand by doing this task it helped me to understand what might or could happen when making our music video so as a learning curve for me and my group is to be prepared so things do not turn out bad.

        Music History

Music videos represent a crucial part of the music industry. Artists owe their careers to music videos as they are being given the chance of impressing the public not just with their vocal talent, but also with their looks or moves.
Thirty years ago, music video used to be less important then it is nowadays. MTV (Music Television) was the phenomenon that gave so much power and importance to the music video. MTV started broadcasting in 1981 in the USA and it marked the beginning of the music video's ruling over the music industry. The first video ever played on MTV was 'Video Killed the Radio Star' by The Buggles. As MTV was broadcasting 24-hour-a-day music, music videos were needed to be produced. Consequently, music video began to play an important role in artists' careers. It is considered that even Madonna's career has been greatly influenced by her videos that presented a sexy, appealing look of the artist. Some experts say that Madonna has been inspired by the image that the actress Greta Garbo has used in her silent movies. MTV has been highly controversial: some saw as the beginning of an amazing, new, fresh era in music, others considered it to mark the end of true musical talent, as artists have been become more appreciated for their looks instead of their vocal abilities.
Currently music videos are as important as the song itself, sometimes even deciding the success of a song or artist. Collections of music videos are being sold on tapes tapes CD's and online e.g. I tunes. Music video's greatest fans are apparently watching them muted just to enjoy their artistic value. They consider that a music video should be assessed based on its visual qualities and not on the song quality. It seems that the music corporate managers, have realised the potential of using female sex-appeal in music videos, therefore this feature is being used excessively as it is more popular for the public.
The birth of the music video has created a new type of directors such as video directors. MTV started even listing directors with video credits and this profession has become more and more popular. But it seems that most video directors don't specialise in this particular art form, they see it as being just a step on the way to directing a movie. Many start directing videos or commercials, hoping to get the recognition to build a name and to direct a movie. It seems that even video directors admit the fact that a music video is secondary to the song itself.

Our group did a research on different blogs of media students who have completed their coursework. This was one of the blogs we found and thought their video was quite interesting as it was similar to ours.
The music videos above are bands we looked really into. The World Alive, Paramore, Linkin Park and Hollywood Undead. From their music videos we took some ideas that we could add onto our music video. For example, the destruction scene in The World Alive's music video where they added several effetc off mass destruction which has a relation to the genre of Rock. Rock is defined as being wild, having fun, some may say rebelious and destruction. The reason why it's related to these type of stereotypes of becuase of the instruments and loud music of the genre Rock. Our reason for choosing Rock music was because as a group we're a fan and it's something different compared to other groups.
From our research of these bands especially Hollywood Undead gave us the idea of using the mask in our video. And from some scenes where we see chaos on The World Alive's video we thought maybe we could relate our song to the Summer Riots. The lyrics of our chosen song also had lyrics such as "one-by-one we rise at night" and so on which we related to riots where the groups meet up and one-by-one they go and caused the chaos.
This is another band where we looked at in our research. From them we wanted to sing in a scene like theirs where you see them in a dark stage. However we had difficulties with location as the studios were used for students who are doing their GCSE work on. Plus the location we had available was a small room used for music students where the appropiate instruments were available and didn't have permission to move them around.
From the research we also had to identify the costumes as it is important to relate it to the genre. When people think of Rock they make think of Metal, Leather clothing but as time has changed where you'll get mixtures of Genre. For example Rock + Pop which was our genre. And the music video above is similar to our chosen track and from their clothing we wanted something similar to theirs.
