Evaluation

A2 Evaluation Questions:

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conversions of real media products?

From the lyrics of our music video we identified that the lyrics had a deep meaning to it. It was
related to destruction and anger which is a typical convention of rock genre music which is our
chosen genre. The type of lyrics of our song is similar to other rock songs which is all about rebellious life style. From the lyrics we decided we could somehow link it to the summer riots in London which clearly challenges the convergences of typical rock music videos where you'd see actors acting crazy, for example in the Paramore music video Ignorance. We took some ideas from that video and implemented into ours. However, our video is quite different to theres as we're going to show clips in other scenes of riots

2) How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

3) What have you learned from your audience feedback?

From our audience feedback we learned that our location has to better. A typical convergence of rock music video is in a stage or studio showing the band singing. Some may also have other scenes like Linkin Park do. For example, in their video 'Numb' they show the band playing and singing in a church which is a dark area and other scenes showing a story of this girl. So in our video we thought of having few clips of any sort of riots related to the ones that happened in London during summer. However, we had to think again and thought of re-shooting the band scene in a better location.

Also from the audience feedback we also got suggestions from people that maybe we could re-consider our costumes to make it more typical for a rock band. So as a group we thought of some ideas for better costume and thought of some possible ideas. Perhaps this time have props such as gloves or tattoo's. Also the costume should be different of the actors and the singers in the band as it confused some viewers not sure that who's who.

The image above shows the costumes we considered and thought we pretty much got it exactly right. But the audience thought of more leather clothing, big boots etc something thats typical of heavy rock songs. However from our research we found that our chosen song is a Rock/Hip-Hop like Hollywood Undead so we don't think we'll need leather clothing, big boots to suit our video. Also we considered the age of band as everyone is 18 so you'd expect at that age the band will be wearing similar type of clothes as show in the image above. Leather clothing and big boots wouldn't suit that age group. The image of Paramore on the right also is similar genre to our song and they also wear similar type of costume that we chose. When we're re-shooting it then we can consider to make our costumes better than casual so we don't lose marks on our costume. The following picture shows what the audience thought and maybe it is something to consider but from our research the group believes that the current costume is more suitable for many things as mentioned before. Age, genre etc.

There was also a problem with lighting as the room we filmed in was automatic lighting when someone enters so we couldn't turn it off whatsoever. However, at that time that was the only room available for us which was a problem because there was no back-up. From this we thought of editing and making the room darker but we had feedback from our teacher that it wouldn't look that great and most likely lose marks on it. So again we had to re-consider the location and this time we've got the studio available which is dark and suitable for our video.

We also had some good ideas from the audience that we could add to our video to show more clips of one doing something good and bad. For example, as our video is related to riots and we want to show that not only youths were involved but so were elderly people so one idea was to show an old teacher doing his school work and then putting on his mask on to join riots. Also an additional scene of several people of all age, race and gender taking the masks off. Also we could add more scenes like one of the band members doing graffiti showing a bad side to it.

We went to the teacher who's in charge of the drama studio to ask for her permission to use the studio however her response was we're not allowed. So the problem now is we don't have a good location to film it in now and have to stick to our current clip. In the editing stage, somehow we need to make the location look good for it to look like an appropriate place. We tried thinking of other possible locations which would closely match the studio but there aren't many options. One location we thought we could do was outside in the playground but taking the instruments down there will be a problem. The teacher in charge of it didn't want instruments being moved around as there are music students who'll need them so we would've had a short time limit to film which isn't good enough.

4) How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

In our research stage we were given a link to a music website called 'Jamendo' and 'unsigned artist' which was the site where we found our chosen song. All the artists were unsigned in those websites with no music video. We also had to contact the artist/band for confirmation to use their music video for educational purpose for our media grade. The email confirmation was sent to one of the group members with the lyrics of the song which made our life easier.

Other media technologies we used was video sharing website 'YouTube'. From this site we searched all sorts of  rock genre music videos to pick out some interesting shots and locations that we could consider to implement in our music video. With great developments in technology recently we're lucky to be able to have websites like these to help us with the coursework. If this wasn't available we wouldn't have been able to find an unsigned artist as well as look at rock genre music videos as they are hardly show on TV. If YouTube didn't exist then we'd have to watch and wait watching music TV channel and hope for a rock video song to come on. Also the problem is that you can't repeat the video so you only got one chance to pick out everything or wait for a long period of time for it to repeat again.

At our construction stage we used a flipcam to record our storyboard to make it animated and make it clear and easy for audience, teacher or anyone who watches it to understand. A still picture really doesn't show enough if its bad drawing and we didn't have any artists in our group to make a easy understanding storyboard. So using this flipcam we were able to talk and explain each shot to make viewers understand whats happening. If this wasn't available we would've had to post it as an image and maybe it wouldn't be clear to people as the way we understand. The flipcam was very useful as we recorded our audience feedback with it, mainly because its small, easy to use and has a usb port where we're able to import it and upload on our blog quickly.

Also when recording our music video we used our mobile phones to play the song that we chose. Technology made it easier as you can download the song for free from the internet which can be put onto the phone very fast. If mobile phones didn't have this sort of technology available in it then we would've had to record the song on a tape and play it on a tap player which costs money and time.

For the editing part of the construction we had the software Final Cut Pro available which has a lot of features for editing to make the video look more professional. Last year for our movie opening we had to use Imovie which wasn't that great as there weren't many features available like Final Cut Pro. This software was new to the group and difficult to understand but with technology available we were able to google and youtube for tutorial videos and text which helped us understand it and tested it by doing practice tasks to get used to it.

It also helped us in our Ancillary task as we were able to take photo's with our mobile phones of locations and instruments we used as well as the band. We then edited it using the softwares we had available such as Photoshop to help create a professional looking digi-pack CD cover and a great looking Magazine.

Social network websites like Facebook helped us in our audience feedback as we posted a rough cut of the music video and considered the comments we got from them whether it was good or bad and ideas that we could a pply to make it better. Blogs were also a key factor as we posted it on our blog and other groups in our class were able to view it and share their views.

Website like Prezi could be used as it's a great presentation slide which zooms into text, flips around which make it more interactive and great to use. It has features such as adding background colour, text font and colour, able to add images, animation and add different shapes to make it look creative. Media technologies improved loads that were able to work more presentable in a fun way, interactive and animatic. Otherwise we probably would've had to use powerpoint for this which isn't very good compared to Prezi as texts can't be zoomed in or have any features being added like Prezi.

Overall new media technologies that helped us in our coursework were a great help. It helped us create a more or less professional looking video which really didn't cost anything or waste time. If they weren't available we'd have to do it the old way. Watching TV or buying magazines and albums to get ideas for the task of this project. All these technologies helped us being more efficient.
